Short Bio Julia Araújo
Julia was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, and has been immersed in music from an early age. Her first public appearance came at the age of 12, when she was selected to participate in a national children’s TV singing show. At 14 and 15, she continued developing her stage presence by performing in children’s theatre productions, where she both sang and danced.
Raised in a richly musical family, Julia was surrounded by a wide variety of genres. Her grandmother nurtured her love for classical music, sharing afternoons listening to opera and zarzuela after school. With her grandfather, she discovered the world of tango, one of Uruguay’s most emblematic musical styles. Her mother’s eclectic taste further broadened Julia’s artistic influences.
At 16, during a guitar lesson, her teacher discovered her natural vocal ability and introduced her to the singing teacher who would guide her for the next three years. She began classical vocal training and, at 18, was accepted into the State Music School “Vicente Ascone”, where she pursued her Bachelor’s degree in classical singing.
From that moment on, Julia appeared in many of Uruguay’s major concert halls and theatres. At 22, she began working at the prestigious SODRE / Adela Reta National Auditorium, where she received her first solo opportunities.
In 2016, she won first prize in an important national competition, the “Luis Sambucetti”. The following year, she began her Master’s studies in Opera at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig, Germany.
Julia made her official European debut in 2020, singing the role of Micaëla in Carmen at the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, Italy. In 2021, she was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Lotte Lehmann Academy, where she worked with renowned international professionals.
In 2022, she joined the ensemble of the Stadttheater Gießen in Hessen, Germany. Since then, she has performed major leading roles including Caterina Cornaro (Donizetti), Vitellia (La clemenza di Tito), Tatjana (Eugene Onegin), Helena (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Atalanta (Xerxes), Leonora (Il trovatore), among others.
She was nominated as “Young Artist Discovery of the Year 2022/2023” by the Frankfurter Rundschau (nominated by Judith von Sternburg) for the distinguished opera magazine Opernwelt.
